Representatives of the Asian Youth Liberal organizations met in Kandy, Sri Lanka from 25th to 27th March, 2011 in order to participate in the workshop on CALD youth strategic planning. I also had an opportunity to present and interact with other counterparts in the Asian region while making sure exchange of views on the present situation of the Liberal Party and the Liberal Youth organization.

The CALD Youth Strategic Planning Workshop was held successfully in Kandy from 25th to 27th. I was given an opportunity to represent the Liberal Youth SriLanka and I understood that it offers a forum for politically oriented liberal youth to contribute to the development and Democracy in Asia.

I was thinking about the role of the Liberal Youth Group in Sri Lanka, as I have to speak about it at a meeting which aims to bring together youth representatives in Sri Lanka who work in the same areas of interest as us. It came to mind that young people in Sri Lanka need to understand the main issues in their society and they should also be able to help in the process of solving them. This is very important and it needs to be addressed. Doing so will make sure that young people are really interested in society’s issues, it would also allow them to participate in the solving process while being able to gain background knowledge of the situation. The Liberal Party of Sri Lanka respects and supports democratic values, human rights, the rule of law and the values of the open economy. It also had to make a decision a few years ago as Sri Lankan politics polarized.

The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats Youth group is currently meeting in Kandy for a Strategic Planning Workshop. Delegates from several Asian countries representing youth movements have gathered for a follow up meeting, following the initial establishment of CALD-Y last August.
